The Jewish Human Rights Coalition-UK is the first ever coalition of UK-based Jewish communal organizations committed to advocating for human rights and fighting racism, both in the UK and international arena.
The Coalition comprises:
- The Board of Deputies of British Jews
- Jewish Leadership Council
- Community Security Trust
- Holocaust Educational Trust
- B’nai Brith International, London Bureau
These organizations share a long and commendable history in tackling racism both within the Jewish community and in collaboration with other community groups as well.
The first international project of the Coalition has been to engage in the processes leading up to and including the Durban Review Conference itself. This conference, to take place in Geneva in April 2009 will review the third World Conference Against Racism that took place in Durban, 2001.
In preparation for the conference the JHRC-UK has:
- attended preparatory meetings of the DRC in Geneva at the UN Human Rights Council
- consulted with the UK and EU government missions in Geneva
- raised awareness within the Jewish community and other community groups to the importance of tackling racism within a global context
- built coalitions with other rights NGO’s in the fields of: womens’ rights, sexual orientation, religious discrimination, freedom of speech, among others
- met with UK government officials to discuss the goals of the conference and the particular concerns of the Jewish community
- established a Task Force, comprising a wider group of Jewish communal organizations to provide input and help build strategies and policy for the work of the JHRC-UK
- provided resource materials and information on the conference to both the Jewish and wider community
